“As soon as I heard my knee pop, I knew something was wrong." Ronnel Donnelly

At just 21, striker Ronnel Tammlyn Donnelly is learning that even in elite football, challenges can strike when least expected. Shortly after joining Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, Donnelly suffered a serious knee injury during the CAF Women’s Champions League COSAFA Qualifiers against Zesco Ndola Girls of Zambia — a moment that could have shaken even the strongest athletes.

“As soon as I heard my knee pop, I knew something was wrong. The pain was overwhelming, and I was filled with frustration and disbelief,” Donnelly recalls. “It was devastating because I had just arrived at the tournament. But I believe everything happens for a reason, and I’ve put my trust in God.”

Donnelly revealed that the injury was a major setback, especially so early in her Sundowns journey, labeling it as horror: "I'd worked so hard to get to this point, and to see it all potentially slipping away was just heartbreaking. It was a storm of emotions and I think I was in shock, trying to process what was happening. It was like my worst fear had come true, and I couldn't believe this was happening to me at this stage in my life, but I know the plans that God has for me, so I just put my trust in him."

Recovering from injury is as much mental as it is physical, and Donnelly has found comfort in the support of those around her. "I received support physically, emotionally, and mentally from my teammates, coaches, and medical staff at sundowns during this difficult moment. They've been there for me throughout, and I'm beyond grateful for each and every one of them. My teammates, in particular, have been amazing, and I appreciate everyone's support and help right now.

Yet what could have been a crushing blow has become a story of resilience and support.

“My teammates, coaches, and the medical staff at Sundowns have been amazing. They’ve supported me physically, emotionally, and mentally throughout this period,” she says. “My family has also been by my side, and prayer has helped me stay strong. Knowing that I’m not alone motivates me to keep going and work towards my recovery.”

For Donnelly, the injury is not the end — it’s a stepping stone to greater strength and growth. “Having people who care for you, even when you’re not on the field, motivates me to get up and work harder to recover,” she explains.

With short-term goals focused on full recovery and long-term ambitions to contribute to Sundowns’ league and continental success, Donnelly embodies the mindset of an athlete who refuses to be sidelined by setbacks. Surrounded by a team that believes in her, she’s already preparing for the day she returns to the pitch — stronger, sharper, and ready to make her mark.
