As the TUT Matsatsantsa Ladies Football Club prepares to head into the Varsity Women's Football Tournament at the TUT Stadium in Pretoria, all eyes are on their dynamic winger and captain, Tshegofatso Motlogelwa.
At just 24 years old, Tshego has already made a name for herself, not only in the Hollywoodbets Super League but also on the international stage, having been called up to the South Africa Women's Senior National team. Transitioning from her previous team, Soweto Fabulous, she has become a pivotal player for TUT.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Tshego to discuss her football journey, her role models, and her vision for the future of women's football in South Africa.
The Beginning of a Passion
Q: How did you first get into football? Was there a particular moment or person who inspired you?
Tshego: I fell in love with the game and also my dad was the one that inspired me to play at a young age
Inspirations and Role Models
Q: Who were your role models or favourite football players that you looked up to growing up? What did you like about them?
Tshego: Growing up I used to look up to the likes of Portia Modise, Amanda Dlamini and Refiloe Jane.
Dreaming Big
Q: If you could play for any other team in the world, which team would it be? What do you like about that team?
Tshego: Manchester United, it’s my favourite club.
The Hollywoodbets Super League Experience
Q: What are your thoughts on the overall level of competition in the Hollywoodbets Super League?
Tshego: Teams are very competitive now and the level of competition has risen compared to the past two seasons. Women’s football is really growing, it’s very impressive.
Elevating Women's Football
Q What improvements do you think are necessary to elevate women's football in the country?
Tshego: We just need sponsorship, people and brands - or someone who believes in our craft to invest in women’s football the way it is with the men’s game in that way we will see the biggest improvements in women’s football.
Inspiring The Future
Q: How do you think the success of female footballers like yourself can inspire the next generation of players?
Tshego: It will pave the way for the next upcoming generations. The younger generation won’t have to go through what the older ones went through and also we will be role models to those little girls.
