"I thought a credit card was free money" – Nqobile Khwezi's journey to financial empowerment

In the glamorous world of media personalities and influencers, the temptation of a lavish lifestyle can often cloud one’s judgement when it comes to financial decisions. But for Nqobile Khwezi, a dynamic force in sports, fashion, and entertainment, mastering financial discipline has been a journey of self-awareness and resilience.

Nedbank sat down with the award-winning SuperSport presenter at the Ya Rona House. She opened up about her financial journey, which highlights the transformative power of financial literacy and the discipline that comes with better money management.

She admitted that early in her career the allure of easy credit could be misleading because she believed that a credit card was free money. She has learnt from this mistake. She reflects on how longevity now resonates deeply with her, saying "Although I am young, I have managed to understand that for myself, longevity matters. Prioritising what truly holds value in the long run over temporary splurges is key."

Her emphasis on longevity is paramount, particularly in an industry where trends come and go in the blink of an eye. Constantly making measured financial choices and engaging in effective financial planning are crucial steps towards securing a financially sound future.

Rather than chasing luxuries, Nqobile quickly learned that prioritising longevity and taking accountability are part of the formula for reaching your financial objectives. "Hold yourself accountable," she says. "Stick to your plan and don't stray. Financial discipline is about aligning your choices with your goals."

Becoming self-aware and being financially savvy did not come ‘cheap’ for her. In an era dominated by curated lifestyle and aspirational content, she learned one key lesson – the hard way: substance is more important than superficiality. She asserted that the biggest misconception is that everyone is rich. But selling a lifestyle doesn't equate to personal wealth. It's about understanding what truly inspires you and making mindful choices. By prioritising longevity, holding herself accountable, and learning from past mistakes, she has begun a path towards lasting prosperity.

Nqobile's story serves as a beacon of inspiration, shining the light on financial wisdom through introspection, resilience and the importance of having open financial conversations with family and friends. As consumers navigate the complexities of personal finance, her journey inspires everyone to make informed choices, and one of her tips is to understand the rewards of your account to use the benefits to drive better money choices.
