SAFA’s provincial women’s football league, popularly known as the Sasol Women's League Kicked Off the 2024 Season with High Aspirations in the Eastern Cape and Limpopo on March 16, 2024.
In preparation for the highly anticipated inaugural season of the Sasol's Women's League 2024, we had the privilege of sitting down with Sasol Manager of Group Brand and Sponsorship Dean Somerset.
In an exclusive interview with Sasol's Manager of Group Brand and Sponsorship, Dean Somerset, we uncovered Sasol's main hopes and aspirations for this groundbreaking season.
As we delved deep into the aspirations and hopes for the forthcoming 2024 season of the League, Somerset shed light on the company's commitment to empowering women in sports and fostering talent development.
“As we gear up for the new season of the Sasol Women's Football League, Sasol's aspirations revolve around continuing the advancement and development of women's football in South Africa.” Said Dean Somerset.
“Sasol aims to provide a platform for female players to showcase their talents, foster community engagement, and inspire the next generation of athletes. Additionally, Sasol hopes to continue supporting the league's growth by expanding participation and promoting gender equality within the sport.”
Looking back on past achievements, the Sasol's Manager of Group Brand and Sponsorship highlighted proud moments that have defined the Sasol League over the years. From empowering female players to promoting inclusivity and diversity in sports, the league has consistently made strides in elevating women's football in South Africa.
“Reflecting on past seasons, several proud moments and achievements stand out for the Sasol Women's League. These include the league's expansion to encompass more regions across South Africa, increased viewership and attendance at matches, and the emergence of talented players who have gone on to represent the national team.”
He added that: “The Sasol League continues to be a breeding ground of women’s football talent, not just for Banyana Banyana and other junior national teams, but also for teams that participate in the Hollywood Bets Super League – this is indicative of the role of the Sasol League within the value chain of women’s football in South Africa.”
Somerset shared how the the league has improved and evolved from when it first started back in 2009 and also emphasized Sasol's commitment to promoting women's football and providing a platform for talented athletes to showcase their skills.
“Over the years, the Sasol Women's Football League has evolved significantly, demonstrating tangible improvements and changes. One notable evolution is the enhanced professionalism within the league, with improved coaching and referee standards, player facilities, and administrative support.”
Asked if he could share any standout success stories or breakthroughs from players or teams in previous seasons that have made a significant impact on the league, the Sasol's Manager of Group Brand and Sponsorship prudly revealed:
“There have been several standout success stories and breakthroughs from players and teams in previous seasons that have made a significant impact on the league. This includes remarkable performances by underrated teams, individual players rising to prominence through exceptional skill and dedication, and instances of teams overcoming adversity to achieve success.”
“These stories not only inspire fans but also highlight the depth of talent and competitive spirit within the Sasol Women's Football League. Most Banyana Banyana players namely Wendy Shongwe, Noxolo Cesane and players abroad namely Hildah Magaia, Linda Motlhalo and Thembi Kgatlana came through the Sasol League.”
In addition to outlining Sasol's remarkable goals and achievements, Somerset touched upon the exciting initiatives and partnerships planned for the new season. "We are thrilled to announce several groundbreaking collaborations and initiatives aimed at further elevating the Sasol Women's League," he stated.
"Looking ahead to the new season, fans can anticipate exciting initiatives and partnerships planned to enhance the overall experience of the league. Sasol is committed to promoting youth involvement in football. Additionally, there may be events aimed at increasing the visibility and accessibility at the Sasol National League Championship to a wider audience."
