Janine Van Wyk is no stranger to South African football. As a veteran defender, former national team captain, and founder of JVW FC, her influence on the women’s game has been undeniable. Now, she embarks on a new journey as head coach of JVW FC in the Hollywoodbets Super League. We caught up with her to discuss her transition from player to coach, her expectations for the season, and the broader landscape of women’s football in South Africa.
From Captain to Coach: A New Challenge
Transitioning from a playing role to coaching is never easy, and Van Wyk acknowledges the challenges she has faced in her new position. “Shifting from playing to coaching has been a big adjustment, especially in terms of decision-making. As a player, you focus on your own performance, but as a coach, you have to manage an entire squad, balance different personalities, and make tough tactical and selection decisions,” she says. Another challenge has been separating my past role as a teammate from my new leadership position while ensuring the players respect and trust my approach.”
Expectations for the Hollywoodbets Super League Season
With the Hollywoodbets Super League kicking off this weekend, Van Wyk has high hopes for her squad. “We’re excited for the Hollywoodbets Super League to kick off. Our goal is to be as competitive as possible, maintain consistency, and improve on last season’s performances. We want to challenge at the top while continuing to grow as a team.” she asserted.
Goals for JVW FC This Season
When asked about her primary objectives for the club, Van Wyk is clear: success isn’t just about winning titles. “While a top finish is always the ambition, our focus is on improving in all areas—both tactically and mentally. We want to create a team that competes at the highest level week in and week out. Development is also a priority, ensuring our younger players gain valuable experience.”
What to Expect from JVW on the Pitch
Fans can look forward to an exciting brand of football from JVW this season. “We’re working on refining our playing style, aiming for a more dynamic and disciplined approach.,” Van Wyk explains. “Our focus is on being well-structured defensively while being fluid and aggressive in attack. We want to play entertaining football but also ensure we’re solid and difficult to break down.” JVW New Signings
Biggest Competition in the League
The Hollywoodbets Super League has grown in competitiveness, and Van Wyk knows her team will have tough battles ahead. “The league is getting stronger every year, and several teams will be pushing for the title. Mamelodi Sundowns remains a strong force, but all clubs are showing their quality. Every match will be a challenge.”
Rising Stars to Watch
JVW has always been a club that nurtures young talent, and Van Wyk points out a few players to keep an eye on. “We have some exciting young talents coming through, and this season will be a great opportunity for them to step up. Players like Bonolo Mokoma, Reitsumetse Mosuoe and Thorisho Mphelohave been showing great promise, and I believe they will make a big impact.”
The State of Women’s Football in South Africa
While the women’s game has made great strides, challenges still persist. “One of the biggest issues is the lack of financial investment and resources,” Van Wyk states. “Many clubs struggle to secure sponsorships, and that affects the overall development of players and the league’s competitiveness. We need more commitment from corporates and football stakeholders.”
Investment and Media Coverage: Enough or Not?
When it comes to media coverage, Van Wyk believes there’s still room for improvement. “ There are still challenges in areas like funding, resources, and access to top-level facilities. More investment is needed in grassroots development to ensure young girls have the opportunity to grow in the sport. The gap between the top teams and others is also something that needs addressing to ensure a more competitive league.” JVW Fixtures
Looking Ahead
As Van Wyk embarks on this new journey, her passion for the game remains unwavering. “While the league has grown, there’s still a long way to go in terms of investment and visibility. More sponsorship and financial backing are needed to sustain clubs, improve player conditions, and make the league fully professional,” she says. “ Increased media coverage would also help drive interest and attract more fans to the game.”
